Shopping and Recreation
Shop until you drop! The northwest
suburban area is a shopper's paradise. With so many
stores from which to choose, shoppers come from miles away to
visit Streamwood's enviable shopping district. From
small specialty stores, to large, nationally known chains,
nearly any shopping need can be met by local vendors. If
it is a mall you desire, Streamwood sits in the geographical
center of five major malls. The closest is Woodfield
Mall, one of the nation's largest indoor retail centers.
Stratford Square, Charlestowne and Spring Hill Malls are all
large, strongly anchored retail sites. Each of these
four malls are within a short 15-20 minute drive. The
Huntley Outlet Mall, on I-90 west in Huntley, provides upscale
items at discount prices.
Streamwood boasts an excellent and diversified mix of
recreational facilities. An abundance of recreational
attractions can be found in Streamwood and surrounding areas.
The beautiful 4,500 acre Janura Forest Preserve bounds
the northern end of Streamwood, providing a natural buffer to
adjacent suburban communities. The Preserve provides
hiking, biking and horseback riding. Picnic areas
conveniently bring you and your family back to nature.
Poplar Creek supports a variety of fresh water fish.
There is also a restored sample of the original prairie of
Illinois.
The
award winning Streamwood Park District operates a number of
facilities throughout the community. The Park District
has two community centers, 38 parks encompassing a total of
250 acres, nine playing fields, four tennis courts, 19 jogging
paths, 27 playgrounds, three public swimming pools (two
indoor, one outdoor) and two winter ice skating rinks.
Preschool for ages three to five is available to residents,
located in varying locations in the Village.
A
new community center, Park Place, offers a state-of-the-art
fitness center, indoor basketball courts, indoor aquatic
center comprised of a large lap and leisure pool, aerobics
studio, and elevated indoor track. Recreational services
are available to residents of all ages, including creative
dramatics for children, a children's museum, classes in adult
investment strategies, stress management, and a Senior Center.
Also operated by the Streamwood Park District, The Hoosier
Grove Schoolhouse Museum shows what life in the area was like
years ago.
Streamwood Oaks Golf Course is a municipally-owned,
nine-hole golf course open to the public. Operated by
the Village, this 3,404 yard championship course was
designated one of the most challenging golf courses in
Illinois.
The Poplar Creek Public Library offers a vast array of
books, written material, services and education/recreational
programs, designated for all age groups. Meeting the
needs of higher learning, Elgin Community College is located
within a short driving distance from Streamwood.
Nearby communities also have much to offer. The Elgin
campus of Elgin Community College, or the Hemmens Auditorium,
in downtown Elgin bring in top entertainment, plays and
concerts. The Rosemont Horizon and the Arlington
International Racecourse and Convention Center have items of
interest year round. Each neighboring community of
Streamwood offers its own variety of theater, shows, museums
and historical attractions.
