Starting or Relocating a Business

In order to start a new business in the Village, a series of inspections must be conducted to ensure that your business is suitable for the area in which you want to locate and that the building you're moving into is structurally sound.  In general, inspections will be coordinated by the Community Development Department for building, fire and, if necessary, health.  Once all inspections have been approved, you may obtain a business license from the Village Clerk’s Office.

Over 600 commercial and industrial users call Streamwood home.

The procedure is the same whether it is a home-based or conventional business.  Following is the "Zoning Compliance/Business Occupancy" procedure:

  1. Complete a Zoning Compliance/Business Occupancy form.  You can print a copy of this form from our Forms and Applications page in the Reference Desk section of our website.  The zoning district for the proposed business must be approved by the Community Development Director before an inspection is scheduled.  If the zoning is approved, all necessary inspections will be scheduled.  A $60 fee, for conventional occupations, and $30 fee, for home occupations, must also be paid at this time.
  2. A site inspection will be scheduled with the Building and Fire Departments, and if necessary, the Cook County Health Department.  The owner and/or the applicant must be there for the inspection.
  3. If it is determined that the structure is generally acceptable for tenancy of the business, and meets the requirements of the Zoning Ordinance then the "Zoning Compliance for Business License" will be approved.  If no work is planned on the structure, approval to obtain a business license will be granted.
  4. Complete a Building Permit Application.  You can print a copy of this form from our Forms and Applications page in the Reference Desk section of our website.  This must be completed and plans reviewed by the Community Development Department prior to issuance of a building permit.  This may be done after the "Zoning Compliance for Business License" is approved or it may be submitted at the time of initial inspections.
  5. All construction requires a building permit, and all contractors must be licensed to do work in the Village.
  6. During construction, inspections will be required.
  7. Once all construction is completed and approved, an approval to obtain a business license will be issued.
  8. Complete an Application for Business License from the Village Clerk's Office, or you can print a copy of this form from our Forms and Applications page in the Reference Desk section of our website.
  9. Once a final inspection for occupancy is completed and approved by the Community Development and Fire Departments, a business license will be issued by the Village Clerk.
