Every Streamwood Firefighter is cross-trained as a Paramedic and each fire apparatus has advanced-level paramedic capabilities that allow for prompt response to medical emergencies. Within the Village, there are two state-certified ambulances that allow for transport to local hospitals. All members operate under the Illinois Department of Public Health and within the scope of Advocate Sherman Hospital’s medical direction.
The Fire Investigations Team is a vital component of the Fire Department and is completed in conjunction with the Office of the State Fire Marshall and the National Fire Protection Association standards. It allows for the additional protection of the Village of Streamwood through accurate cause and origin determination, and to help prevent future crimes and accidents.
Each member undergoes an in-depth training program that requires recertification every 4 years. Members utilize a scientific method of investigation, along with evidence recognition and collection, photography, interviews, and reporting to assist in the cause and origin determination. The team is available to be called out to respond after a fire or other related incident 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
It is the practice of the department to perform an annual life-safety fire inspection on each business occupancy within the municipality.
Members of the Fire Prevention Bureau are Illinois state-certified fire inspectors and complete a rigorous training class and yearly recertification hours. Members work in conjunction with the Streamwood Community Development and Public Works Departments to ensure that all required codes are being met, working together seamlessly within the Village.
Incidents requiring a fire response are diverse in nature, but the members of the department are thoroughly trained to respond following policies and guidelines to ensure the most appropriate and effective protection methods are used for the community we serve.
Each member of the department is certified to a hazardous materials operations level to provide immediate services in the event of a hazardous materials incident.
The hazardous materials team is comprised of members that are further trained in responding to the needs of a high-level incident. Each member of the team completes additional training and certification to offer additional services during a hazardous materials incident.
The Streamwood Fire Department Honor Guard is a team of specially-trained firefighters who have committed to assist in paying the final respects of fallen firefighters.
Honor Guard members will participate in Line of Duty Death funerals locally and regionally as the need dictates. Honor Guard members will stand watch next to the fallen firefighter's casket and provide burial duties.
Streamwood Fire Department Honor Guard members acquire regular training from the Associated Firefighters of Illinois Honor Guard, which is the largest Honor Guard in the country. The Streamwood Honor Guard also represents the fire department in local events including Village ceremonies and parades.
Performing the duties of a firefighter/paramedic is not the only service that the Streamwood Fire Department offers its residents. There are many other types of emergencies that do not involve fire but do require firefighters to be specially trained.
Technical Rescue is one of those types of emergencies. Trench Rescue, Rope Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, and Building Collapse Rescue are the specialized disciplines of technical rescue. For the fire department to be able to respond to these special types of emergencies, there needs to be a team of highly-trained individuals called a Technical Rescue Team (TRT). The Streamwood Fire Department’s TRT is currently made up of 8 members.
Each discipline of TRT has 2 levels of certification, operation and technician. Each level of certification comes with additional skills and training requirements. Most technical rescue incidents cannot be completed with just one rescue team because of the complexity of the unique situations requiring additional personnel and equipment, beyond what each department carries individually. A state-organized Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was created to help organize which departments will respond to other departments incidents. Streamwood is one of 12 Fire Departments in MABAS Division 1. Being a member of the MABAS Division 1, TRT requires extra training each month.
Streamwood traditionally hosts a Confined Space specialty training that utilizes the manhole prop in our hose tower along with a tanker truck from a hazmat cleanup company. Two of Streamwood’s TRT members are on the Division 1 deployment team. This team can be deployed anywhere in the state where a disaster occurred. Streamwood Fire Department also has 3 of its TRT members who are part of the Illinois Task Force 1 Urban Search and Rescue team (IL-TF1). Members of IL-TF1 are not only able to be deployed to any type of disaster incident in the state but could be deployed nationally as well.
The Streamwood Dive Team was developed in 2010 to better serve our community with skilled emergency response divers.
Currently, the department has 5 divers that are qualified to respond to calls within Streamwood and to surrounding communities. Emergency response divers respond to various emergencies related to persons and vehicles in local ponds, lakes, and rivers. We also respond to assist police with evidence recovery. Our divers are qualified and available to respond at any time of the year including diving under ice. Our dive team is part of MABAS Division 1 (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) which includes 12 departments. MABAS Division 1 Dive Team members work together when responding to calls and while completing our required training. Every diver must complete five training dives, a skills assessment, and an annual swim qualification each year to remain active on the Streamwood Dive Team.
