Community Programs
The Streamwood Police Department strives to engage and participate with the community. We do this by providing a helping hand and educational opportunities to enhance the active partnership we have with our citizens. We are proud to offer several community-wide programs and programs designed to keep our community - and our residents - safe.
ALICE, which stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate, is an active assailant response protocol that covers how to react in an active threat situation. This training can be provided to businesses, schools, houses of worship, medical environments, or any other public or private setting. Classes are presented in a 90-minute instructional training module and incorporates fundamentals of this useful protocol.

The Streamwood Police Department is honored to host a Citizens Police Academy annually. This program includes classroom lessons, multi-media presentations, live demonstrations, open discussions, and exercises in various aspects of police work within the different divisions of the department. The objective of the Citizens Police Academy is not to train an individual to be a police officer, but to produce informed citizens who have a clear understanding of services offered by the police department, grow community engagement, and advocate support of police sponsored activities and programs within Streamwood. The course allows a firsthand look at what rules, regulations, and policies the police follow, as well as an overview of the various areas of law enforcement.
The Citizens Police Academy is a series of interactive classes held once a week, for two hours, over a ten-week period. Individuals who apply to participate must be at least 18 years of age and live or work in the Village of Streamwood.

- Patrol/Traffic Stops

Each year the Village of Streamwood is proud to host the annual Holiday Helping Program. This opportunity helps make the winter holidays a little brighter for our community children and their families who have experienced unforeseen circumstances and events.
In December, Streamwood police officers, firefighters, officials, and staff, will utilize contributions made to the Holiday Helping Program to provide local children gifts for the holidays.
With the generous donations received, we have been able to sponsor nearly 85-100 children each year! If you are interested in learning more about the program contribution, please contact the Streamwood Police Department Social Workers at 630-736-3700. The Neighborhood Watch Program is organized to enable the police and community members to work together. The goal is simple, to make each home, street, and area more crime resistant. The program participants learn how to communicate regularly with their neighbors, recognize and report suspicious activity, increase home and vehicle security, enhance personal safety of residents, and make the neighborhoods less attractive to criminals.
Streamwood Police Department maintains strong relationships with several Neighborhood Watch Groups. It is not difficult to form your own Neighborhood Watch Group. Once neighborhood needs have been assessed, a “block captain” is selected to lead the group. This person assists in obtaining and distributing information, organizes neighborhood meetings, and recruits others to join the group. An active Neighborhood Watch Group is a vital component for community well-being.
Interested in joining or starting a Neighborhood Watch Group? Please contact Sergeant Pat Silver at psilver@streamwood.org or 630-736-3762 for more information.
Dumping prescription medications down drains, toilets, and in the garbage contaminates our drinking water. There is a way to safely dispose of it!
The Streamwood Police Department is participating in the Cook County Sheriff’s Prescription Drug Take Back Program to further public safety and environmental protection. This partnership provides a collection box at no cost to the Village, due to a grant the sheriff’s office was recently awarded by the U.S. Department of Justice to expand the program.
This is an opportunity for residents to safely discard unused/expired prescription and over-the-counter medications at no cost. The collection receptacle is in the vestibule of the police station.
This receptacle is not for liquid pharmaceutical drugs or used/unused medication needles.
Red Light Camera Program
Each year, too many families are destroyed by intersection crashes often caused by drivers running or ignoring red lights. The victims are often occupants of other vehicles and/or pedestrians in the intersection. Protecting our community is the number one objective of the Village of Streamwood. It is for this purpose we implemented a red light camera at the intersection of Routes 19/59 to assist with encouraging safer driving habits.
Program Overview
Our first and foremost intention with this program is that it can help us save lives. Our police officers can’t enforce traffic laws everywhere, all the time. But by utilizing these cameras it will help us keep our intersections safer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The entire system is funded by the violators.
Vehicles disobeying the stop light are automatically photographed. The camera is triggered by any vehicle entering the intersection after the signal has turned red. A Department supervisor views every picture to ensure that the vehicle is actually in violation. For a complete description of our program, click here for a copy of the enacting ordinance.
The Streamwood Police Department encourages you to respect the rules of the road and keep everyone safe. Please support us and our efforts to making the drive home safe!
Program Goals
Streamwood’s red light traffic cameras will help keep our kids - and our community - safer. Our red light program aims to:
- Increase traffic safety by improving driver behavior
- Decrease intersection crashes and injuries
- Enhance public safety 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
- Enable law enforcement to focus on other missions and responsibilities
- Ensure the entire red light camera program is violator funded
