Scout and Hope

The Village of Streamwood utilizes a K-9 Unit as an integral part of the Police Department's Support Services Team. The Village first established a K-9 Unit in 1996.

The current K-9 Unit is comprised of two officer-handlers and police service dogs. Once a dog is selected for use, the dog and its handler undergo a rigorous training program before being certified for patrol or supportive care work. Off duty, police service dogs live with their handlers, becoming an integral part of those families.

K-9 Scout

Scout is our K-9 Patrol Unit with his handler Officer Collin Klein. Scout is a German Shepard trained as a multi-purpose K-9. Scout is trained in obedience, obstacles, narcotics detection, tracking (non-aggressive), handler protection/aggression control, gunfire tolerance, basic land cadaver recovery, and building, article, and area searches. Scout completed his certifications and training and was sworn into service in November, 2018.

K-9 Hope

Hope is our first K-9 Comfort Dog. Her officer-handler is Corporal Detective Mary Kosartes. Hope is a German Shepard/Golden Retriever mix that was provided to the Streamwood Police Department by Canines 4 Comfort , an organization that provides emotional support animals to the community. Hope is trained to provide comfort to people during a time of crisis as interacting with a dog is a non-threatening, non-judgmental way of helping break down mental and emotional barriers. Hope has been assigned the following duties: critical incident stress management (CISM), community outreach and engagement at public events, major/traumatic incidents, school support and demonstrations, grief, loss and trauma, natural disaster incidents, victim forensic/criminal investigation interviews, nursing home/assisted living facility visits, as well as first responders/staff wellness. Hope completed her certifications and training, and was sworn into service in December, 2021.
